Orland Kay Engebretson

Orland K. Engebretson, 81, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Ecumen - Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Orland was born on March 20, 1932, the son of Ener and Anna (Huseby) Engebretson in Scambler Township, rural Otter Tail County, Minnesota. He was raised and educated in Pelican Rapids, graduating from high school in 1950. During his high school years, he excelled in baseball, basketball and football. As a young man, Orland enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. Orland was united in marriage to Marlys Herfindahl on September 3, 1955 at Lake Park Lutheran Church, Lake Park, Minnesota. Upon his return from the Korean War, Orland began his education at NDSU and received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Orland and Marlys moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he worked for the city of Milwaukee. After two years, they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and he worked for Harvey W. Nelson Construction in Lake Park for nine years. Orland and Marlys then moved to Moorhead, where he went to work for Abbott/Arne/Schwindt Incorporated for thirty-five years, retiring in 2002. After his retirement, they made their home in Detroit Lakes. Orland enjoyed fishing, golf, deer hunting and playing cards. He also enjoyed watching Hogan's Heroes and westerns. Orland cherished time spent with his family and friends. Orland is survived by his wife, Marlys Engebretson of Detroit Lakes, MN; his children, Kari Engebretson of Baxter, MN; Kevin (Suze) Engebretson of Ottertail, MN; Kelly (Guy) Thomas of West Des Moines, IA; Kathleen (Kevin) Kaley of Brandon, MN; Tina (Daryl) Kupitz of Onalaska, WI; six grandchildren, Tori (John) Peterson, Tara (Eddie) Gallegos, Toni (Jason Gelting) Woodworth, Will and Rob Thomas, Emma Kupitz; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Ad Cook of St. Cloud, MN; three sisters-in-law, Pauline Engebretson of Fargo, ND; Marge Engebretson and Margaret Engebretson both of Pelican Rapids, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. Orland was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Clifford, Eliss, Larry, Raymond, Harold and Erling, two sisters, Esmer Restad and Marion Nelson.
