Dana Claire Powers, 89 of Rochert, Minnesota, died Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Essentia Health, Fargo, North Dakota. Dana was born on September 16, 1925 to Claire and Worthy (Kissel) Powers in Sanborn, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Sanborn, graduating from high school in 1943. As a young man, Dana enlisted in the United States Navy serving in the Pacific from January 1944 until receiving an honorable discharge in June of 1946. Dana then attended college at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota where, in 1983 was elected to the Athletics ' Hall of Fame. He was united in marriage to Grace Minnehan on June 28, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge, Minnesota. They made their home in Breckenridge, where Dana served as the Wilkin County Assessor until moving to Moorhead, Minnesota to become the Clay County Assessor in 1965. He was also very active as a referee for high school basketball and football games and later moved up to the college ranks. Dana was the first referee elected to the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in1993. He served as a referee from 1948 to the late 80's. Dana, later worked as a court administrator until his retirement in 1985. Grace passed away in 1992. Dana married Virginia Halseth on December 30, 1993 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Rochert, Minnesota. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Breckenridge as well as The Last Man's Club in Wahpeton. During his retirement years he also officiated at more than 1500 weddings. Dana enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, traveling, gardening, playing cards and bridge club. He especially loved being at the lake and spending time with his family. Dana is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginni" Powers of Rochert, MN; children, David Powers (Barb Olson) of Detroit Lakes, MN; Dale (Kim) Powers of Fargo, ND; Diane Koole of Cushing, MN; Dana M. Powers (Marian Feenstra) of Maui, HI; Denise (Mike) Anderson of Moorhead, MN; Duane (Cathy) Powers of Fargo, ND; Jeff (Diane) Halseth of Ramsey, MN; Ginni (Tim) Webb of Albuquerque, NM; Jerry (Marilyn) Halseth of Plymouth, MN; Scott (Lisa) Halseth of Glyndon, MN; eighteen grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Dana was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Grace, son-in-law, Peter Koole, brother, Duwayne Powers and sister, Dawn Toft.
