Clarence R. Hedlund age 88 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Saturday May 2, 2015 at his residence. Clarence Richard Hedlund was born on May 2, 1927 in Aitkin, MN to Henry and Hazel (Borg) Hedlund. As a young boy the family moved to a farm near Lake Park, MN. He grew up and attended school there. The family later moved to a farm north of Detroit Lakes, MN. Clarence served in the United States Navy from May of 1945 to August of 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy he worked on a farm near Nashua, MN. On March 31, 1949 Clarence was united in marriage to Marlys Erickson in Detroit Lakes, MN. Over the years they farmed near Nashua, MN, Frazee, MN, and in 1988 moved to the current farm in Richwood Township, rural Detroit Lakes, MN. Clarence was very active in the Church. He taught Sunday School and Confirmation classes for many years, served as head usher, and was a faithful member of the Men's Bible Study. He enjoyed traveling around the countryside with his brother Jim testing Soybean's for the government. He also did work for the Becker County Extension Service for several years. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, deer hunting, and time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a very caring, compassionate person, who was always willing to help others. He is survived by one son, Harold (Cheryl) Hedlund, of Callaway, MN; three daughters, Zona Paesler, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Kitty (Jim) Ueke, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Cindy Nelson, of Park Rapids, MN; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter, Lydia Beyer; numerous nieces and nephews; two brothers, Jim Hedlund, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Bob Hedlund, of Detroit Lakes, MN; four sisters, Gladys (Irvin ) Larson, of Thief River Falls, MN; Rose Evans, of Arizona; Marlys (Cliff) Young, of Fargo, ND; and Marcella (Milton) Erickson, of Detroit Lakes, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys (2014); one daughter, Janice Johnson; one granddaughter, Wendy Johnson; one brother, Wallace Hedlund; and one sister, Virginia Kiehl.
