Donald Phillips Williams

Donald Phillips Williams 90, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota died December 14, 2015 at his home. Don was born on August 29, 1925, the son of George and Julia (Phillips) Williams in St. Paul, Minnesota. While attending  school in St. Paul, Don sold magazines and papers for five cents. He also worked at a restaurant as a waiter, dishwasher and a cook. After graduation, Don was drafted into the United States Army. He served with pride in Company C 244th Combat Battalion in Africa and Europe. Don earned the rank of Sargent and was honorable discharge in April of 1946.He returned to St. Paul and worked as a cook for a short time before taking a job at a local hospital as an orderly where he worked for several years. Don eventually moved to California and worked as an orderly for a number of years until his retirement. He returned to Detroit Lakes, where he has lived for the last twenty five years. Don was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Zion Lutheran Church. He also served on the honor guard in Detroit Lakes. Don had many friends in the area and enjoyed visiting local businesses to say “hello” and hand out some candy. He enjoyed visiting, especially with the breakfast crowd at McDonalds. He will be missed by many. Don is survived by his brother, Jim Williams of New Town, ND; numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Eileen Talbert, Betty Jones, Rose Steele and Kathy Duggar, brothers, George and Ralph Williams.
