Merlin R. Engen age 73 of Detroit Lakes, MN died June 7, 2016 at Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Merlin Raymond Engen was born March 16, 1943 in Hawley, MN to H.R. “Bob” and Gilma Heier Engen. He attended school in Hawley and later moved to Detroit Lakes, where he completed his education. He served in the United States Navy from 1964-1968 during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge he returned to Detroit Lakes and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Schultz and Lindsay Road Construction of Glyndon, MN. He also worked for Driveway Service of Detroit Lakes for over thirty years, and later drove truck for TEAM Industries of Audubon, MN for seven years before retiring. Merlin enjoyed classic cars, attending car shows, coffee at the 59er with buddies, and time spent with his nieces and nephews. He is survived by one brother, Gerald (Gloria) Engen, of Silverdale, WA; one sister, Arlene Hedlund, of Detroit Lakes, MN; nieces and nephews, Kari Ann (John) Syvertson, Wade (Linda) Engen, Bradley (JoAnna) Engen, Chad (Maria) Engen, Ryan (Tammy) Engen, Debby (Daniel Bridges) Engen, and Amanda Wagenman; fourteen great nieces and nephews; and three great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Larry Engen; sister in law, Ruth Engen; and nephew, Jeffrey Engen.
