Phillip L. Johnson age 94 of Detroit Lakes, MN went to his eternal home on October 15, 2016 at Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Phillip LeRoy Johnson was born November 13, 1921 in rural Audubon, MN to John L. and Betsy (Glain) Johnson. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1940. Phillip served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he worked for the Lakes Dairy Co-op in Detroit Lakes. On May 6, 1949 he was united in marriage to Arline Daniels. Over the years Phil and Arline lived in several cities including Underwood, MN, Kettle River MN, Tomah, WI and Owatonna MN before they returned to Detroit Lakes in 1971. Over the years Phil held sales positions with various companies and finished his career with Monarch Chemicals. On April 23, 1976 he married Ellie Springer in Las Vegas, NV. Over the years they made their home in Fargo, ND, Little Cormorant Lake, and Detroit Lakes. Phillip was always very active in Boy Scouts, he earned over thirty two medals, and later served as a Scout Master for a number of Boy Scout Troops. Phillip loved to fish in Canada, Alaska, and his favorite spot was Little Cormorant Lake. He enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening, and lawn care. Phil loved people and had many friends. He was known to give out hugs. He was a member of the Eagles, Elks, VFW, and St. Peter’s Church. He is survived by one daughter, Debra (Robert) Jacoby; one daughter in law, Winnie Johnson; one step daughter, Diana Goetting; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Smith; and one brother, Kenneth (Irene) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arline; second wife, Ellie; son, Jeff; three brothers, Albert, Peter (Alpha), and Walter (Aggie) Johnson; brother in law, Burt Smith; and his parents. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday October 22, 2016; 10:30 a.m. at the Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Audubon, MN. Arrangements have been entrusted to the West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, MN.
