Douglas H. Meyer age 73 of Detroit Lakes, MN died October 16, 2016 at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Douglas Howard Meyer was born January 23, 1943 in Sleepy Eye, MN to Alfred and Ruth (Murphy) Meyer. He grew up and attended school in Sleepy Eye, graduating from Sleepy Eye High School in 1961. Following high school he worked on a local farm and also for Del Monte Foods in Sleepy Eye. On May 1, 1964 he was united in marriage to Donna Blum in Stewart, MN. They made their home in Gibbon, MN for a few years before moving to Medford, MN where Doug worked as a salesman for the George A. Hormel & Co. of Austin, MN. He later worked in sales for the Hubbard Milling Co. and Van Dale Implement. They moved to Gaylord, MN for a short time before moving to Detroit Lakes in 1973 where he continued working for Van Dale and later for Custom Farm Seed. He ended his career working for Homestead Lumber of Perham, MN, retiring from there in 2002. Doug was a very caring husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family and grandsons on Big Floyd Lake. He loved keeping family traditions alive. He was always willing to help family and friends whenever they needed him. He enjoyed planning trips, hunting, fishing, and bowling. Trips to Mexico Beach in Florida will be treasured memories. He is survived by his wife, Donna; one daughter, Robin (Doug) Soyring, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two grandsons, Patrick and Ryan Soyring; one sister, Judith Remus, of Sleepy Eye, MN; one sister-in-law, Darlene (Otto) Homburg, of Lonsdale, MN; four brothers-in-law, George (Judy Mueller) Blum, of Stewart, MN, James (Silvana) Blum, of Montgomery, MN, Gary Blum, of Olivia, MN, David (Rebecca) Blum, of LeCenter, MN and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Services will be on Friday October 21, 2016; 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
