Vaida L. Wetteland age 76 of Detroit Lakes, MN died January 2, 2017 at Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, following a courageous nine year battle with leiomyosarcoma. Vaida Lee Wetteland was born February 27, 1940 in rural Detroit Lakes, MN to Franz and Agnes (Winter) Sivertson. She attended Country School near her home and later attended school in Frazee, MN. She graduated from Frazee High School in 1958. She then attended Moorhead State University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught elementary school in Sheboygan, WI, Circle Pines, MN, and Anoka, MN. On July 18, 1964 she was united in marriage to Thurman Wetteland at Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. They made their home in Anoka until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1972. Vaida taught school in Audubon, MN until her retirement in 1995. Vaida was a very artistic and creative person. She was also known as having a very keen wit. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, and gardening. But most of all she loved the time spent with her family. She is survived by her husband, Thurman; two daughters, Melinda (Dan Messman) Wetteland, of Anoka, MN; and Jennifer (Mike) Brunsberg, of Wadena, MN; two grandchildren, Johanna Brunsberg and Bjorn Brunsberg; one sister, Vernette Leslie, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two brothers in law, Leonard Hammer, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Charlie Deike, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Vallie Carlson, Valare Hammer, and Velda Deike; and her parents.
