Richard M. Swiers

Richard M. Swiers, age 83 of Detroit Lakes, MN went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on April 3, 2017 at Ecumen – The Cottages in Detroit Lakes, MN. Richard Marvin Swiers was born on October 17, 1933 in rural Bejou, MN to Andrew and Margaret (Haats) Swiers. He grew up and attended elementary school in Bejou and graduated from Mahnomen High School. On November 5, 1954 he was united in marriage to Agnes Van Dellen in Crookston, MN. They lived in Willmar, MN, where Richard worked in the Piggly Wiggly grocery store for two years before moving back to the family farm in Bejou in 1957. In 1978 Richard and Agnes moved to Detroit Lakes. Richard continued farming near Bejou until declining health forced him to retire. According to Richard, he was “an ordinary guy who loves the Lord Jesus, my wife, my family, and the peaceful open spaces of the farm”. Richard loved his family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them. He will be missed by all who knew him. Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Agnes; his five children, Nancy (Maynard) Halland, of Moorhead, MN; Duane (Sheila) Swiers, of Bejou, MN; Ronald (Liandi) Swiers, of Sauk Rapids, MN; Kevin (Judy) Swiers, of Dent, MN; and Robert (Jennifer) Swiers, of Moorhead, MN; ten grandchildren, Corey (Joanna) Halland, Tony (Ali) Halland, Lisa (Andy) Pull, Natalie (Steve) Krier, Shaun (Tammy) Swiers, Jessica (Jason) Neisen, Stephanie (Andrew) Kanipe, Jacob Swiers, Caleb Swiers, and Daniel Swiers; fourteen great grandchildren; siblings, Howard (Arlene) Swiers, of Shakopee, MN; Elores (Herb) Swift, of Crookston, MN; Vernon (Gertrude) Swiers, of Dublin, CA; Doreen (Robert) Gunderson, of Mahnomen, MN; and Calvin (Crystal) Swiers, of Sun City West, AZ. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Tootie on March 23, 2017. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday April 12, 2017; 11:00 a.m. at the Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the West Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
