Arnold M. “Whitey” Mackner age 90 of Detroit Lakes, MN died November 21, 2020 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Whitey Mackner was born November 4, 1930 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Merten and Selma (Jahnke) Mackner. He grew up and received his education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1948. Shortly after graduating he moved to Seattle, WA, where he worked for Boeing. He then served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955. Following his discharge from the Navy he moved back to Detroit Lakes. On February 17, 1956 he was united in marriage to Ruby Moltzan. He worked at the Swift Turkey Plant and later for Culligan Water before starting a thirty two year career as a lineman for the City of Detroit Lakes. He also farmed and ranched, which he enjoyed very much.
Whitey enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, traveling, and playing softball. He especially loved spearing fish in the winter. He was a member of the Becker County Sheriff Dept. Posse and also very active at Zion Lutheran Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Kim (Kent) Disse, of Hill City, SD; one son, Terry (Susan) Mackner, of Detroit Lakes, MN; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Matt) Mueller, Lee (Megan) Disse, Derek Mackner, Jordan Mackner, Logan Mackner, Landon Mackner, Mara (Jason) Kent, Madison Sager, and Jocelyn Sager; seven great grandchildren, Oliver, Lauren, Liam, Nash, Natalie, Nolan, and Hank; one sister, Shirley Klomstad, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and many nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Anderson; one brother, Dennis Mackner; and his parents.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, November 25, 2020; 10:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
