Bruce A. Barrett

October 7, 1929 — January 16, 2018

Bruce Allen Barrett was born on October 7, 1929 in Staples, MN.  His parents were Ethel (Carlson) Barrett and Blanchard C. Barrett.  He attended school in Staples until the middle of the 8th grade when his family moved to Detroit Lakes, MN. Bruce graduated in 1947.  While in high school he was active in football, basketball and track.  After high school he worked at Lampert Lumber Company for one year before enrolling at Hamline University in St. Paul in the fall of 1948.  He returned to work at Detroit State Bank the middle of his sophomore year and worked until he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War (1951).  He served in San Antonio, TX and Tokyo, Japan. Upon discharge, Bruce enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where he completed his college education, graduating in accounting in 1957. He married Harriet H Fark on August 3, 1957. Bruce worked in Minneapolis one year at an accounting firm.  He returned to Detroit Lakes in the spring of 1958 and started his 35-year banking career at what is now Bremer Bank. Bruce was active in many community affairs, serving as president of the Jaycees and the DL Chamber of Commerce.  He was treasurer of the Salvation Army, the Becker County Red Cross and the Becker County Fair Board.  He was on the Oak Grove Cemetery Board and was a 41-year member of the DL Noon Rotary Club. Bruce was a member of First Lutheran Church and served on the church council and the foundation board. Bruce was honored to be inducted into the Laker Athletic Hall of Honor in 2016 for achievements in football, basketball and track. He is survived by his wife Harriet; four daughters: Julie (Jim) Hessel of Bloomington MN, Barb (Craig) Dyk of Portland OR, Sue (Matt) Wolfe of Oak Grove, MN and Amy (John) Engerholm of Peoria AZ; nine grandchildren: Laura (Chris) Hessel Ostrom, Katie (Jake) Dyk Weber, Janessa (Phil) Dyk Haunschild and Josh Dyk; Gabe and Hannah Wolfe; Liam, Declan and Jameson Engerholm, and two step-grandchildren: Zack (Christie) Hessel and Angela (Renard) Hessel Wiggins. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Barrett of Roseville MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
