She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Hamar Church in Rothsay, MN (New Life Parish).
Born in Fergus Falls, MN on a cold winter night in February to Carol (Stras) and Ralph Halbakken. She grew up on a farm, the middle of three sisters, often claiming to suffer from “middle child syndrome”. Her first three years of school were in a one room schoolhouse: District 61 in Oscar Township, rural Rothsay.
She graduated from Rothsay High School in 1967, where she was involved in Honor Society, 4-H, church, and school choir.
Married on November 2, 1968, to Steven Bednarz to which two children were born: Sheila and Scott. She was widowed at 21. She raised two fine children on her own.
Her 43-year nursing career began at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. After 7 years as an LPN, she decided to pursue a career advancement to provide a better life for herself and her children. She received her 4-year degree in nursing at Moorhead State University, after which she was employed at Dakota Hospital in Fargo. After dedicating 18 years to a position in Dialysis, she ventured on another route as a Parish Nurse at Zion Lutheran Church in Rural Pelican Rapids.
During her work years, many lifetime friendships were developed with her clients, families, and co-workers.
Following her retirement, she continued in service, being involved with Lutheran Social Services respite care, volunteer at Trinity Lutheran Church and travel escort for special needs individuals.
Her family and friends were so very important to her, and she treasured time with them.
Cheryl is survived by her children: Sheila (Don) Blaner, Scott Bednarz; sisters: Mary (Alan) Brandt, Janet (Kevin) Akerlind; grandchildren: Nicholas Schmitz, Cassidy Schmitz (Conner); great grandchildren expected this fall; niece Lisa Brandt; nephew and godson: Greg Brandt.
