Daniel John Tigges

September 3, 1965 — January 6, 2021

Daniel John Tigges was born Sept 3, 1965, in Crookston, MN, and died, unexpectedly, in his home, on Jan. 6, 2021 at the age of 55. Dan was the second son and fourth and youngest child of John and Yvonne Tigges. He moved with his family in 1967, was raised, and spent his entire life in Detroit Lakes, MN, although he traveled extensively, in the US and beyond with a full summer driving to Alaska being the most recent in 2017. He graduated DLHS with the class of 1983, and attended several colleges/universities, before moving on to one of his greatest and proudest accomplishments, rebuilding the former Lakeside, in 1991, and operating it as Lakeside 1891. Dan married Erika Gilsdorf in September of 1990, their son Christian was born in April of 1995. They later divorced but remained good friends. After leaving Lakeside, he served as food and beverage manager for many years at the Detroit Lakes Country Club. In 2012, he began working at Herzog roofing, and remained there until the time of his death. Dan was an avid fisherman and hunter-of wildlife and of the elusive morel mushroom. Dan loved to cook and eat a fine meal, and he loved to cook for family, friends, co-workers, and many a hunting camp. But more than anything, Dan loved being Christian’s father, and he celebrated Christian’s academic and life successes, proudly wearing that red hat with the W on it. Dan is survived by his son, Christian (Sarah) of Portland, Oregon, his parents John and Yvonne, Detroit Lakes, brother Jeff (Carol) Battle Lake, sisters Tammy (Jeff Olson) Baxter, and Terri (Carl) Hutt, Perham, MN, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was preceded in death by his black lab, Kirby, and is missed by his current furry companion, Lexi. The family will honor Dan with a funeral mass at a later date, along with a celebration of life, with family, friends, and, of course, good food. A Funeral Mass will be held June 26, 2021 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes; 1:00 p.m. with a visitation 1 hour prior. Following the Mass, there will be a Celebration of Life at Long Lake Park in Detroit Lakes. Be sure to bring a lawn chair.
