David Nybo

January 17, 1947 — July 12, 2019

David John Nybo, known as “Dave”, was born January 17, 1947 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Norris and Mildred (Beck) Nybo.  Dave was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes and a 1965 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School.  Following high school, Dave enlisted in the US Marine Corp, serving in Vietnam, and honorably discharged on March 31, 1969.   After returning home from the service, Dave worked as an independent painter and often would work with Morris Paint and Decorating.  In 2008, he graduated from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, MN, with a bachelor’s degree in social work.  Dave’s social work degree lead him to a position with Dream Catchers and then onto his perfect job, working as a social worker in the Child protection division for the White Earth Tribal Council.  Dave enjoyed working with children and took pride in the way the children trusted and gravitated to him.  Dave retired in 2015 due to declining health. Dave was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, a mentor to confirmation students; Lifetime member of the VFW Post #1676 and a member of the American Legion Post # 15. He volunteered at the local food pantry, and the Dorothy Day House.  Dave’s most important group were his friends in AA.  Dave was extremely proud of his 19 year Medallion he had just received.   He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his family and friends, and long drives in the country with Sheila. Deeply loved, Dave’s passing is mourned by his recent wife and partner of 24 years Sheila Ojala; daughter Keri, and stepdaughters Susie, and Brandi; grandchildren Anders, Hannah, Leala, Warren, and Ava; sister Noreen (William) Schroeder; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Nancy Nelsen and Paul Nybo; stepson Toby Windels.
