Donald Walter Kohler, age 84, passed away October 14, 2025, at his home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Donald was born on June 15, 1941, in Detroit Lakes to Donald and May (Peterson) Kohler. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in June 1958 while still in High School. After graduating in 1959, he attended boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes. Donald faithfully served his country until his discharge in 1964. He was a proud member of the American Legion and spent 20 years active in the Color Guard to honor his fellow comrades at funerals with the 21-gun salute.
Donald dedicated much of his life to the Steel Workers Union, where he worked with pride and commitment. The Detroit Lakes community was extremely important to him. He was a familiar face at the 59er, where he enjoyed breakfast and good company. Donald was always generous with his time and service to others, whether that was working meat raffles, helping with fish fries, providing security at WE Fest, and countless other community or church gatherings.
Among his greatest joys were fishing and deer hunting, and he took pride in teaching others how to respect and safely operate firearms. He had a classic love/hate relationship with the Minnesota Vikings, was always engaged in politics, and known for his smart aleck sense of humor that kept everyone on their toes. Despite his rough and tumble exterior, he was always a softy for his family.
Donald is survived by his son, Scott (Shelly) Kohler; his daughter, Kathy (Dan) Zahler; and his brother, Dave (Beverly) Kohler. He was a cherished grandfather to six grandchildren and a proud great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Kohler, and his parents Donald and May Kohler.
His legacy of hard work, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him
