Edward A. Schmidt age 83 of Park Rapids, MN formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN died September 23, 2025 at his residence.
Edward Adolph Schmidt was born July 9, 1942 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Arthur and Hannah (Tong) Schmidt. He grew up and received his education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1960. He then attended Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, where he also played football. Ed served in the United States Army from 1961-1964. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and also served time in Korea. It was at Fort Riley that he met Carolyn Sue Schmidt. They were married on December 15, 1964. They lived in Parkers Prairie, MN for a short time before moving to Audubon, MN in 1969. He served as a police officer in Audubon until 1974 when he became an officer with the Detroit Lakes Police Department. He retired in 1998 as Captain.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling, and side by side rides with his dog Coop. He also enjoyed gardening and was known for baking delicious apple pies. He was also a regular member of the neighborhood coffee and lunch groups in Osage. Ed regularly attended his kids and grandkids sporting events, which he enjoyed very much.
He is survived by one son, Ty (Sally) Schmidt, of Albertville, MN; two daughters, Darcy Bradley, of Grand Forks, ND; and Amanda (Jeff) Martin, of Big Lake, MN; seven grandchildren, Jessyca Macklin, Logan (Hannah) Schmidt, Tanaeya Schmidt, Amiri Dukes, Caleb Martin, Nakaiya Schmidt, and Jacob Martin; two great grandchildren, Micah Schmidt and Isaac Schmidt; two brothers, David (Cindy) Schmidt, of Buffalo, MN; and Richard (Barbara) Schmidt, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sisters, Pam (Don) Skarie, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Ann (Gary) Fingalson, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sue; two brothers, Merwin Schmidt and Jerry Schmidt; one sister, Carol Welty; brother in law, Don Welty; and his parents.
