Gladys Viola Benson

Gladys V. Benson age 101, long time resident of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away peacefully at home January 17, 2022, Detroit Lakes, MN.  She has gone to be with her LORD and Savior Jesus Christ.

   Gladys Viola Benson was born on October 20, 1920, near Doran, MN to Henry “Shorty” and Anna (Haroldson) Anderson. She attended Lincoln School in Fergus Falls, MN thru the eighth grade and then worked for her family. In 1938 she married Orville Svien. The couple were the parents of two children, Dale and Sharon.   Orville passed away at the age of twenty-six. In 1943 she married Clarence Benson, father of Bob and Darlene.   They farmed near Waubun, MN and were the parents of one son, James.   After her children were raised, she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes and was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and child of God. 

   Gladys was a member of Lake Grove Lutheran Church of Waubun and Zion Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes. She taught Sunday School and also was president of her Homemakers Club, Alter Guild and many other Charity Organizations.   She remembers, as children going to the Salvation Army where she started her knowledge of Jesus, and her faith walk was established. Her hobbies include crocheting, cooking, baking, and gardening.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Orville, and Clarence; her three children, Dale, Darlene, Jim and Sharon along with their spouses; brothers, Orville and Willie; and sister Beverly.

   She is remembered by her Son Bob Benson, Grandaughter Vicky L. Doerfler.   Her family includes eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends.

   Funeral Services will be on Monday January 24, 2022; 1:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with visitation one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, MN. Services have been entrusted to the West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.
