Harold Leroy Gebeke

July 13, 1928 — January 15, 2020

Harold L. Gebeke, age 91 of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.

Harold Leroy Gebeke was born July 13, 1928 in rural Detroit Lakes to George and Amanda (Erickson) Gebeke. He grew up and attended school there. He married Edwina Mahlum on July 22, 1948 in Detroit Lakes. They moved to Moorhead where Harold was employed by Gamble Stores. They made their home in Moorhead until moving back to Detroit Lakes in 2005.

Harold served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He retired from Advance United Expressways in 1986. He was most proud of his accident-free record for his entire truck driving career.

Harold was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends. If anyone ever needed a helping hand, Harold was there to offer one. His passions were fishing, hunting, restoring anything with a broken engine and bragging about his grandsons. Monson Lake was the second home during the summer for many years and Truth or Consequences, NM was a favorite winter destination. Happy Harold's Chuckwagon was his retirement gig selling donuts and sloppy joes at area auction sales which allowed him to collect more broken engines to fix.

He is survived by two children: Randy (Trudy Cruz) of Fargo, ND, Renae (Brian) Sander of Rochester, MN; two grandsons, Zachary Sander of Boulder, CO and Wyatt Sander of Rochester, MN; two sisters, Marjorie Schroeder of Detroit Lakes, MN and Dorothy Sebelius of Dunseith, ND and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four sisters and one brother.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be on hour prior to the service. Interment at a later date.
