Hildur "Peg" Coen

Hildur (Peg) Marjorie Coen age 95, died Friday February 16, 2018 at Ecumen Evergreens of Moorhead, Minnesota. Hildur (Peg) Grettum was born December 9, 1922 in Ulen, Minnesota to Henry and Bessie (Olson) Grettum. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools near Ulen, and Moorhead. She graduated from Moorhead high school and later Moorhead State Teachers College. Peg taught school in Fargo, Montevideo, Rush City, and later Salmon, Idaho. She later taught remedial reading and writing at North Dakota State School of Science and English as a second language to new American citizens. Peg married Douglas Coen on June 10, 1950 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Moorhead. After Doug finished college they moved to Salmon, Idaho where they both taught school. They moved to Breckenridge where she and Doug raised their three boys. She was active in Women’s Study Club, League of Women’s Voters, PEO, and Detroit Lakes Carnegie Library Supporters. She was always an active member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes, teaching children’s and adult Sunday school, women’s group circle Bible study, and small group fellowship leader. Peg enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, reading mysteries, jam making, baking Christmas cookies, carmel rolls and was in general a very good cook. Her family, both extended and immediate was very important in her life, but her home was always with her husband Doug. Peg is survived by her husband Douglas of Detroit Lakes, sons: Douglas Paul (Jane) Coen of Omaha, Nebraska; Peter (Karla) Coen-Tuff of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Philip (Cara) Coen-Pesch of St. Louis Park; grandchildren: Ann (David) Ott, Aaron Coen, Michael Coen; Rachel Coen-Tuff, Matthew Coen-Tuff, Sarah (Ian) Coen-Frei, Isaac Coen-Pesch, Emma Coen-Pesch, Alaynna Neiderhaus, Alex (Samantha) Niederhaus, Claire (Buddy) Carter, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bessie, sisters:, Dorothy Carey, Phyllis Bryant, and brother Henry Grettum.
