Irene Mae Sloan, age 89, Moorhead, Mn, formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away March 13, 2024, at Essentia-Oak crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Irene was born July 31, 1934, in Moorhead, MN to Thorvald and Tina (Billet) Thompson. In 1939, her family moved to a farm at Hope, ND. There, Irene attended Sherbrooke School #3, a one room schoolhouse where she received her elementary education. She attended Moorhead Senior High school where she graduated in 1952.
Irene worked as a secretary at the Medical Service Bureau, the auditing office at FM Hotel and Offices, and at Gamble Skogmo Offices.
On May 29, 1953, Irene married Gerald G. Sloan in Moorhead, MN. The couple celebrate 67 years of marriage.
Irene served as treasurer for Shell Lake Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osage, Mn. There, she compiled the church’s 100-year centennial book. Irene’s hobbies included rosemaling, genealogy, and quilting. She was a long-time member of the Sons of Norway and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Irene is survived by her children; Marlo (Teri) of Detroit Lakes, Kathy Sloan of Moorhead, and Dallas (Diane) of Barron, WI; one sister, Gladys Boril of Virginia, MN; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Gerald; her parents, Thorvald and Tina Thompson; two brothers, Harry and Lloyd; and her sisters Thea Gullekson, Marion Anderson, and Myrtle Knutson.
