Janet F. Peters

Janet F. Peters, age 71 of Detroit Lakes, MN, died November 15, 2020 in her residence under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Janet Faye Mickelberg was born July 27, 1949 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Vernon and Grace Rasmussen Mickelberg. She grew up and received her education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1967. She married Gerald Nybo on November 4, 1967. Over the years they lived in the south and also England due to Gerald’s time in the service. They divorced in 1981. Janet moved back to Detroit Lakes and met George Peters. They were married on September 23, 1983 and made their home in Detroit Lakes. Jan worked for Rural Mn CEP and was the Lifeline Coordinator for St. Mary’s Hospital and she was a hotline counselor for the Lakes Area Service for Rape and Domestic Violence. Jan also volunteered at the Lakes Area Learning Center, where she received numerous achievement awards and recognition for her service. She also had a love of animals and always had her pets. She is survived by her husband, George; several cousins; two stepdaughters, Kathy (Mark) Getchell, of Whitman, MA; and Donna (Jerry) Belter, of Savage, MN; one stepson, Tim (Carolyn) Peters, of Northfield, MN; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Jim Mickelberg. Funeral Services will be on Friday, December 4, 2020; 11:00 a.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN. Memorials are preferred to the Lakes Crisis and Resource Center.
