Janice (Jan) Marie O'Bannon

Janice (Jan) Marie O'Bannon, age 85 of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away Friday, October 3, 2025, at HIA Heather’s House in Fargo, ND.

She was born to Arlington (Mike) and Alice Cincush on February 18th, 1941, in Fergus Falls, MN. She moved with her family to Detroit Lakes, MN in her sophomore year of high school and graduated there in 1960. On June 3rd, 1961, she married Larry Mitchell in Detroit Lakes, MN at the First Baptist Church, and were later blessed with three beautiful children. She married Paul O'Bannon in Rapid City, SD on May 29, 1992.

She worked different jobs during her lifetime including Evans Supermarket, Arctic Enterprises Sewing Plant, Swift & Eckrich until they closed in 1992, and also Lamb Weston RDO in Park Rapids for 17 years until her final retirement in 2009.

She loved her family and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed any time she could spend with them. She also cherished her many friends and valued the fun times and conversations they shared together. Jan's favorite things were flower gardens and plants of all kinds. She LOVED fishing and ice fishing, garage sales, and taking care of her home. She enjoyed listening to Christian music, classic & light rock, country and bluegrass.

She is survived by her two sons, Todd (Karen) Mitchell of Detroit Lakes, MN. Terry Mitchell of Rapid City, SD, and her daughter Lisa (Elliot) Schumacher of Aurora, MN. One brother Paul (Janet) Cincush of Detroit Lakes, MN and also one sister Char (Jerry) Conn of Detroit Lakes, MN, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul in 2006, her parents Mike and Alice Cincush, and one sister Patricia Danner in 1992.

A visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN with the memorial service following at 1:00 p.m.

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to HIA Heather's House in Fargo, North Dakota.
