Jon H Poehler

October 27, 1944 — June 27, 2021

Jonathan Henry Poehler October 27, 1944 – June 27, 2021 Storyteller, angler, hunter, outdoorsman, athlete, writer, card shark, mischief maker. Lover of literature, music, and theatre. Husband, father, brother, son. There are so many ways to describe Jon, but to capture who he was and how much he meant to so many people in just a few words is impossible. He definitely made an impression with his puns, jokes, shaggy dog stories, and wildly inappropriate remarks. Jon presented a gruff exterior, but anyone who spent more than 5 minutes with him discovered that he was a big softie. He’d invite friends over for cocktails with the phrase “Let’s talk smart and pretend to be somebody.” He was a great lover of early rock n’ roll, R & B, folk, and country. He’d listen to his music every evening while making dinner – he was an excellent cook, he used lots of love and lots of butter. Jon was born in St Paul, MN, and grew up in Hastings, MN. He met his wife, Jean, while they were both Juniors at Hasting High School. She was the love of his life. They were married in June 1966 and had two children together. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Jon had a career in corrections for X34 years. His job brought him and his family to Detroit Lakes in 1970, which he referred to as “God’s Country.” Jon spent the rest of his life in the woods and the lakes of the Detroit Lakes area. Jon wasn’t content to only hunt and fish locally. He traveled to numerous states to hunt everything from birds to elk, regularly fished on Lake Michigan for salmon and even went to Panama and Costa Rica to fish for Marlin. Jon also was very active in the local tennis circuit. He helped organize numerous tournaments and was still playing with a local group several times a week. Once they retired, Jon and Jean enjoyed being snowbirds and spending winters in Port Isabel, TX. They were blessed there with many good friends and were always ready to throw a party. Jon loved being a grandfather and was thrilled to go fishing and hunting with his grandchildren. Jon taught them the ins and outs of being good card players. UNO was a family favorite, there was much teasing and laughing involved. Preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Jean. Survived by his brothers, Dave (Sandy) Poehler, Dr Andy (Kim Anne) Hogg, and sister, Ruth (Bill) Estes, his children, Jimbo (Kyung Sook) Poehler, and Joette Poehler, and grandchildren, Daisy, Jasper and Jon Poehler. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Jon’s memory to Let’s Go Fishing (lgfws.com) or Hospice Red River Valley (hrrv.org). Jon Poehler Memorial Folder
