Katherine Viola Harms, 80, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home. She was born Jan 6, 1938, the middle daughter of William and Mavis Simon. She was raised in Puposky, MN and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1956. She moved to Detroit Lakes where she met James Harms. They were married November 21, 1959 in Bemidji, MN. Together they raised 3 children. She worked for the Detroit Lakes school district retiring in 1996 after 22 years. She was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church where she enjoyed the weekly bible studies and in the early years played on the women’s softball team. Kathy’s mother taught her how to be a nurturing, hardworking mother and wife. She baked breads, bars, buns and cakes from scratch. She had a big vegetable garden and enjoyed canning, freezing and jelly making. She could always provide a wonderful meal at a moment’s notice. Kathy and Jim enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, Twins baseball and their grandchildren’s activities including school programs, sports and birthday parties. A few winters were spent in sunny Texas. Family was a very important part of Kathy’s life, she loved spending time with them and looked forward to their visits. Kathy is survived and missed by her children: Natalie (Rick) Bartelt of Detroit Lakes, Mitch (Trish) Harms of Ponsford and Sue (Gerry) Seim of Thief River Falls. Her grandchildren: Bob (Kristi), Matt (Samantha), Rochella (Derek), Shane, Sadie (Joe), Jayne (Brant), Nathan, Kyle, Joel (Jena), Nick and Penny. Great grandchildren: Brady, Sadie, Oliver, Myles, Oscar and Hayes with 3 more coming this year. Sisters: Luella Lohse of Park Rapids, Laura Devries of Bemidji and also a sister in law, Sharon Schmidt of East Grand Forks and many nieces and nephews. Kathy was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2004, her parents and two grandsons, Jedd and Wesley. Our memories of her love will be cherished. May she rest in peace. Funeral Services will be on Monday June 11, 2018; 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
