Kate (Kathleen) Murray (née Doyle) entered this world in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 19, 1933, with a creative mind, a quick wit, and a gift for making people feel welcome. She left this world surrounded by the love of family and friends, having spent a lifetime building connections, creating beauty, and sharing countless conversations, laughs, and stories along the way.
Kate was born and raised in Minnesota, where she developed the resilience, determination, and warmth that would define her life. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Jack Murray, beginning a partnership that would span 67 years and many adventures. Together they raised five children: John (Laurie), Pat (Sue), Elizabeth Hepola (Ron), Kathy (Doug Burlingame), and Dan (Tomi). Their family expanded further with 11 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren
In 1963, Kate and Jack moved their young family to Detroit Lakes, MN, a community that would become home and where Kate would leave a lasting mark. Never one to sit still, she embraced new opportunities and poured herself into every endeavor. Together, they owned and operated The Castaway Motel and Resort and later Fort Detroit, becoming familiar faces to countless visitors and residents alike. Kate also found success in real estate, where her ability to connect with people made her both a trusted professional and a cherished friend.
Although she worked hard, Kate's greatest gifts were found outside of business. She was endlessly creative, finding joy in woodworking, carving, reading, and anything involving words. She had an artist's eye, a craftsman's hands, and a lifelong curiosity about the world around her. Whether she was shaping a piece of wood, immersed in a good book, or tackling a new project, she approached life with enthusiasm and imagination.
But what Kate may be remembered for most is her love of people. She was never happier than when gathered around a table, often with a cocktail, engaged in spirited conversation, sharing stories, laughing until tears came to her eyes, or listening attentively to someone's latest adventure. Her warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others drew people to her wherever she went.
For most of us, the years seem to pass too quickly. Kate, however, had a way of savoring the moments that mattered. She appreciated a good story, a clever turn of phrase, the satisfaction of making something with her own hands, and the simple joy of spending time with people she loved. She embraced life fully and encouraged others to do the same.
Kate was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind a family forever shaped by her strength, creativity, laughter, and love. Although she will be deeply missed, the stories she told, the things she created, and the countless lives she touched ensure that her spirit lives on.
The family wants to say a special thank you to Mom’s bridge group, and her Tuesday afternoon group at the Legion. Also thank you to the wonderful staff at Oak Crossing. We all appreciated the genuine kindness and excellent care she received during a difficult time.
