July 16, 1923 — September 3, 2020

Lorraine (Beck) Mackner, age 97 of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota passed away at the Cottage at Ecumen on September 3, 2020.Lorraine Beck was born on July 16, 1923 in Detroit, MN (later to become Detroit Lakes) to John Jacob (JJ) and Anna Christine (Lofstom) Beck. She was a life-long resident of Detroit Lakes. She was baptized, confirmed and a life-long member of First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1941. After graduation she briefly attended the Detroit Lakes Business College before being called into service as a social worker for the Becker County Welfare Board. She was proud to serve in that capacity in spite of not having a college degree, as generally required for the position. In later years she continued to provide “social services” to others, as a volunteer delivering for Meals on Wheels for over thirty years and often care giving for someone, whether friend or relative. On October 13, 1947 she married Raymond G. Mackner and together had four children. Lorraine was an avid bowler, traveling the country to compete in national tournaments. She was also a consummate bridge player and was always ready for a game. There were regular Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening groups that formed the basis of a large network of card players to fill in the other days of the week. Lorraine had a strong sense of right and wrong. Her faith and family were the basis of her life. She is survived by her children; Roger (Cathy) Mackner of Barnesville, MN; Deanne (Randy) Kavanagh of Blaine, MN; and John (Conith) Mackner of East Gull Lake, MN; eight grandchildren: Brian Mackner, Amy (Sam) Gross, Todd (Laura) Kavanagh, Shane (Sarah) Kavanagh, Ryan (Michelle) Kavanagh, and Coyer (Alissa) Mackner. And ten great grandchildren: Taeana and Arian Mackner; Jocelyn and Harrison Gross; Ethan, Dylan and Nicholas Kavanagh; Wesley, Maxwell and Hudson Kavanagh, and Lyla and Brady Kavanagh and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, a daughter Carol, her parents, three brothers: Kenneth, Gordon and Marvin; two sisters: Leone and Mildred. Funeral services will be on September 9th at 11:00, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Oak Grove cemetery, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Undesignated memorials will be given to First Lutheran Church or Red River Valley Hospice.
