Louella Mae Koenig

December 10, 1937 — January 2, 2024

Detroit Lakes

Louella Mae (Sherbrooke) Koenig, 86, passed away the morning of January 2, 2024, at Essentia Health - Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Louella was born on December 10, 1937, to Oren and Ella (Helgeson) Sherbrooke in Pelican Rapids, MN. Louella graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and married Herbert ("Herb") Royal Koenig several years later. At the time of their marriage, Herb had two children from a previous marriage, Doug and Alan; together, Herb and Louella went on to have four more children: Terry, Katherine, Rick, and Rich.

Louella was a unique, energetic person who loved children, especially babies. She enjoyed baking (she always had a sweet tooth) and cooking and took great pride in being a multiple-year winner of the annual recipe contest held by the Detroit Lakes Tribune. In addition to reading, Louella liked listening to the radio and especially loved walking outside daily during nice weather and in the Detroit Lakes Mall during colder months.

A lifelong letter-writer, Louella enjoyed corresponding with family and keeping up with nearby neighbors and friends, shopping, seeing movies, and getting her hair done (she took pride in her appearance - she always had her nails done and lipstick freshly applied in a happy color). She enjoyed traveling to the Twin Cities area to visit family and even took trips to casinos at times for a bit of fun.

Louella especially delighted in visits from her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren! She prepared little gift bags of treats and toys for them in advance and loved going to local parks and restaurants during visits with them when the weather allowed.

Louella is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Gary, Marvin, and George Sherbrooke; sister Alice Bomfiglio; grandsons Travis Koenig and Brian Koenig; stepson Alan Koenig; and son-in-law Michael Stansberry.

Louella is survived by her children: Terry Koenig (Bonnie) of Moorhead, MN; Katherine Stansberry of Las Vegas, NV; Rick Koenig of Las Vegas, NV;  Rich Koenig (Charity) of Stillwater, MN; and stepson Doug Koenig (Sara) of Richwood, MN; her grandchildren: Tara Stevens (Derek) and Miranda Nortrom (Alicia); Angela Stansberry; Alea Stansberry; Caedron Koenig, Mallorey Knuth (Caleb), Liam Koenig, Evangeline Koenig, and Macauley Koenig; and Kris Koenig and Karl Koenig; her great-grandchildren: Mason and Spencer Koenig; Chance, Shelby, and Cayden Stevens; Soranna Sylvis and Theodore Knuth; and Orion Stansberry, Athena Moss, and Sapphira Moss; her siblings Helen Mathison (James), Marilyn Williams, Ardelle Lundheim (Mark); and many nieces and nephews and in-laws on husband Herb's side.

Louella was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes and personally expressed that she had put her faith in Jesus Christ.
