Lyle J. Smith age 83 of Detroit Lakes, MN formerly of Minot, ND died April 9, 2019 at Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Lyle Jerome Smith was born August 10, 1935 in Esmond, ND to Herman and Carrie (Erickson) Smith. He attended the Isabel School near his home and in 1953 graduated High School from BCATS in Maddock, ND. He then farmed with his brothers. He served in the U. S. Army from 1960-1965, stationed in Germany for some time. Following his discharge from the Army he lived in Minot, ND where he started his trucking career with Farmers Union Federated Trucking, hauling petroleum products. On July 15, 1972 he was united in marriage to Sharon Arne in Maddock, ND. They made their home in Minot, ND. Lyle retired from Cenex in 1998. In his retirement he worked at the Cenex convenience store, filled anhydrous tanks, and hauled sugar beets. Following a stroke, he and Sharon moved to Detroit Lakes in 2009 and Lyle became a resident at Emmanuel Nursing Home. Lyle was an avid sports fan and enjoyed visiting with people. He and Sharon raised Arabian Horses for many years. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two sons, Brent (Tricia) Smith, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Chad Smith, of Fergus Falls, MN; seven grandchildren, Caden, Cole, Kyle, Kallie, Trey, Jerzie, and Drake; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey; five brothers, Henry, Ed, Ernie, Rueben, and Floyd; four sisters, Selma, Elsie, Vivian, and Myrt; and his parents. Memorial services will be on Saturday April 13, 2019; 1:00 p.m. at the Ecumen- Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the North Viking Cemetery, Maddock, ND. Arrangements have been entrusted to the West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes, MN.
