Pearl Violet Berg "Mickey"

December 30, 1930 — June 14, 2018

Pearl Violet Berg, known to friends and family as Mickey, passed away June 14, 2018. Mickey was born December 30, 1930 in Wolf Lake Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Harvala) Nyland. She attended Wolf Lake Country School. She moved to Detroit Lakes and worked at Detroit Coop Dairy. On October 17, 1952 she was united in marriage with LeRoy Berg at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. They were blessed with 65 years of marriage and three children. The couple made their home in Detroit Lakes, many years of which were spent on Long Lake where she enjoyed fishing and waterskiing. When her children were in high school she started work a Big 5 Coop as a bookkeeper, and later was a bookkeeper for LeRoy Berg Inc. Upon retirement Mickey and LeRoy enjoyed times in Arizona, and traveling to Australia, Hawaii, and Alaska, as well as trips with Ed and Kathy Nyland to Florida and Scandinavia, where a visit to Finland was a highlight of the trip. Pearl was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Quilter, member of WFLC, and Sarah and Miriam Circles. She loved needle work – Hardanger, Swedish Embroidery and Quilting; and was a member of the Lakes Area Quilters Guild and Quilters Guild of North Dakota. Her flower garden and houseplants were beautiful evidence of her green thumb. Her greatest joy though came from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mickey is survived by her husband LeRoy; Children, Deb (Bill) Ormseth, Dan (Sheri) Berg, and Diane (Jim) McCormack, all of Detroit Lakes; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Mitchell, Elvie Zitzow, both of Detroit Lakes, and Lois Mitchell, of Kalispell, Montana; brothers, Wally (Pat) Nyland, of Ada, MN; Earl (Betty) Nyland, of Lexington, KY: Jerry Nyland, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Allan (Cathy) Nyland, of Park Rapids, MN. Mickey was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Viola Wald; and brothers, Norman Nyland and Ed Nyland. Funeral Services will be on Monday June 18, 2018; 4:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
