Obituary

Robert Charles Hogancamp was born on December 1, 1949, in Alta, Iowa, to Lois and Wayne Hogancamp. He passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico.

Robert attended grade school in Alta and graduated from Alta High School in May 1968. From an early age, he had a passion for all things mechanical, learning the basics from his grandfather. He pursued this interest at Iowa Central Community College, where he studied truck mechanics and graduated in 1970. While in school, he gained hands-on experience working for International Harvester, further fueling his love for the trade.

After completing his degree, Robert was drafted into the United States Army, serving both stateside and in Vietnam until March 1972. He continued his military service with the National Guard from 1972 to 1974 and with the Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1976.

Bob devoted his career to leadership and management in the maintenance departments of several large trucking companies. A significant chapter of his professional life was with Old Dominion Freight Line, where he combined his technical expertise with a gift for building strong teams. He played an instrumental role in opening several new terminals throughout the Midwest and took pride in watching them grow and succeed. He retired from Old Dominion on January 1, 2015, leaving behind many lasting friendships and connections with colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois Vetter of Alta, Iowa, and Wayne Hogancamp of California; and by his sons-in-laws, Kevin Reynolds and Derek Harmon.

Bob is survived by his life partner, Barb Zahasky of Detroit Lakes; his daughters Wendy Hinman (George) of West Fargo, ND; Becky Hogancamp of Rapid City, SD; and Lisa Reynolds (Joe) of Salina, KS. He was a proud grandfather to Bobby Hinman, Bethany Hinman, Kaelus (Nicole) Harmon, Keagan (Hailee) Harmon, and Breanna (Ethan) Reynolds, and a great-grandfather to Gabriella, Olivia, Rosalie, and Arthur. He is also survived by his brother Ralph (Sandy) of Lake Elmo, niece Chandra, nephew Jeff, and several great-nieces and nephews.

Bob loved his community and was always supportive of efforts to improve Detroit Lakes. He played a key role in purchasing and renovating a building to help Barb pursue her dream of owning a women’s boutique — a project that reflected both his belief in her and his quiet determination to make things better.

He had a passion for car restoration and could often be found leaning over the front fenders of his 1964 Jaguar, oil rag in one hand and socket wrench in the other. He loved the Chicago Bears, time on the lake, and his yellow Labradors, Sunny and Lilly. Bob was an exceptional friend and neighbor, always willing to lend a hand, even recently helping a stranger whose vehicle was stuck in a snow-filled ditch.

Bob will be remembered for his quiet strength, mechanical brilliance, deep loyalty, and unwavering love for his family and for Barb — the love of his life.
