Verna E. Bloom

Verna Elizabeth Bloom, age 107, of Lake Park, MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN. Verna Elizabeth “Kohler” Bloom was born March 22, 1910 in rural Audubon, MN, to Julius and Julia Kohler.  She was baptized and confirmed by Pastor Heyne into the Christian Faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon.  Verna attended country school at District #44 through the 8th grade. Verna was united in marriage to Willard C. Bloom, August 22, 1934 in Detroit Lakes.  The couple had 3 children: Joanne Elizabeth, Roland Willard, and Wallace Neil. The couple made their home in Lake Park until 1950, when they moved to Finland, MN, moving back to Lake Park in the early 1960s. Willard and Verna purchased Bloom’s Hardware and Appliance in Lake Park that Verna operated for 6 years.  They sold the business in 1966, so she could spend her time caring for her family.  Verna loved cooking and baking, tending her flower gardens, crocheting, and entertaining her family and friends.  She was an active member of Lake Park Lutheran Church.  In 1983, Verna’s life was saddened by the death of her husband, Willard “Chubby” Bloom.  She continued to live in her home at Lake Park, and traveled with her brothers and sisters, visiting places she had never been.  She also enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren whom she loved very much. Verna was very well known and loved by her community.    In 2001, Verna sold her home and moved to an apartment in Lake Park.  During these years, Verna took it upon herself to help with the upkeep outdoors and planted a beautiful garden that was enjoyed by all of the tenants.    In 2008, Verna made her home at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park where she remained until the time of her passing.    Verna is survived by 2 children: Joanne Bock of St. Germain, WI, and Wallace (Connie) Bloom of Lake Park, MN; 1 sister, Isabelle Gilbertson of Henderson, NV; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.   Verna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard Bloom; infant son, Roland Willard; son-in-law, George Bock; 3 brothers; 4 sisters; and 1 niece and 2 nephews.
