Roy A. Somdahl, 77, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at his home. Roy was born on April 10,1933 to Roy and Alice (Syverson) Somdahl in rural Ulen, Minnesota. He attended elementary school in Richwood and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1951. Shortly, after high school he worked at a farm in rural Callaway, Minnesota for a short time. Roy enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Dix in Burlington County, New Jersey. After receiving an honorable discharge, he moved to Seattle, Washington and worked for Boeing. After one year, Roy moved to East Grand Forks, where he started a career with Gambles Hardware. He later transferred to Gambles in Detroit Lakes. Roy was united in marriage to Harriet Grossman on July 30, 1967 at St. Peterchr(39)s Lutheran Church in rural, Audubon, Minnesota. They moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where Roy worked at the Gambles Hardware. They later returned to Detroit Lakes and Roy continue to work for Gambles. He then went to work for the Cormorant Store and later worked for Stenerson Lumber, until retiring. During his retirement years he drove school bus for the Detroit Lakes School District and also mowed lawns. He loved the outdoors, woodworking and fixing anything that may have been broken. Roy is survived by his daughter, Faye Somdahl of West Fargo, ND; son, Allen Somdahl of Detroit Lakes, MN; one granddaughter, Keli Somdahl; three sisters, Barbara (Myles) Flint of Reston, VA; Margaret Curtis of Detroit Lakes, MN; Ruby (Boyd) Sharp of Osage, MN; one brother, Ted (Ramona) Somdahl of Richwood, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Harriet (2009).
